Ventricular Fibrillation (V-fib) is characterized by an erratic and chaotic electrical activity within the ventricles, which leads to a complete lack of organized contractions. In this state, no distinct heart rhythm is observed, making it impossible to count a meaningful heart rate. The electrical impulses in V-fib occur at multiple sites within the ventricles and are totally disordered, resulting in the heart being unable to effectively pump blood. Since there is no consistent pattern or rate, one cannot derive a specific heart rate from the fibrillatory activity observed.

In contrast to other rhythms, the chaotic nature of V-fib means that attempts to measure the heart rate are futile.
